Kandos is located at the northern entrance to the Capertee Valley and on the western edge of the Blue Mountains, 231 km north-west of Sydney. The town was established in 1913, when the New South Wales Cement Lime and Coal Company was set up to take advantage of local supplies of limestone, which an enormous aerial ropeway lifted from the quarries.

Once a private village, Kandos is now a progressive town with a quirky underground arts community, and all nestled at the foot of the very grand Coomber Melon Mountain. Kandos is near Rylstone
